When the then-152nd Reconnaissance Group constructed its operations building in 1976, the unit flew F-4 aircraft, the Cold War dominated international policy and Reno’s population was a third the size of today.

    Much has changed.

The 152nd Airlift Wing ushered in a new era Saturday with the ribbon cutting and opening of its refurbished operations building located on the east side of the Nevada Air National Guard Base facing the flight line and the unit’s eight C-130 H aircraft.

“The only thing better than a brand new building is a new old building and that’s exactly what we have here,” said Brig. Gen. William Burks, the adjutant general of the Nevada National Guard. “They’ve basically stripped this building down and built it new again.”

For more than a year, the 152nd Civil Engineer Squadron oversaw the $11 million, federally-funded modernization of the unit’s operations building. Base engineers, along with contractors and dozens of subcontractors, completed the restoration.

“I worked in the operations building when I first joined this unit in 1993. I can tell you that this is not the same building,” said Col. Eric Wade, 152nd Airlift Wing commander. “This building is much more efficient when it comes to design, energy and workflow.”

Reconstruction efforts garnered LEED Silver certification with recycled concrete and drywall, along with skylights and natural lighting for energy efficiency.

The operations group includes the 152nd Operations Squadron and the 192nd Airlift Squadron, which employs the 152nd Airlift Wing’s pilots, navigators, flight engineers, intelligence analysts, aircrew flight equipment managers, aviation resource managers and airfield managers.

The 152nd Airlift Wing operates C-130 H aircraft at the base south of the Reno Tahoe-International Airport to provide tactical air delivery and advanced warfighters for national and state objectives. Additionally, the unit, known as the “High Rollers,” fights wildland fires nationwide, operating the U.S. Forest Service’s Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System, or MAFFS.
