    Above and Beyond

Performing Above and Beyond; it’s what we do. This phrase describes one of the hospital’s very own staff members. During late summer a couple of news agencies picked up on a story involving questions about possible levels of lead-based paint in older homes on some military installations. Fort Belvoir has some of those type of historical homes. In an effort to share information, allay fears, and encourage open communication within the community, key staff from Belvoir Hospital leadership teamed with Fort Belvoir garrison leadership and installation department directors to offer some direct insight into the Fort Belvoir conditions. Leading this charge was Major Grant Evans, who is the Department Chief of Public Health in the hospital. The panel presented the facts and figures and answered a wide-variety of questions from concerned community members.
When asked about the town hall’s importance Maj. Evans replied, “Educating communities about Public Health matters in general is of vital importance. The concept of Public Health, and the advances associated with it, has done more to improve overall human health and wellness than any other area of medicine over time. For example, sanitation and water quality are public health concerns, and improvements in sanitation and water quality are directly responsible for decreasing the occurrence of things like the plague and cholera. Specifically in regards to education on lead, giving communities solid information on what their risk actually is and how to get screened for exposure is critical, both from a purely medical standpoint and for peace of mind."
And peace of mind isn’t something you can fill at a pharmacy. So for that, hospital leadership wanted to formally recognize Evans. During a recent Board of Director’s meeting the hospital director, CAPT Robert Fry, presented Evans with a Joint Achievement Medal. For this and his continued efforts to inform the public we’d like to say, “Well Done”!
