    Madam President
If you find yourself over in the Intrepid Pavilion someday, you should stop by and say hello to the new president. The new president of the National Capital Region Federal Optometric Society (NCRFOS) that is. Fort Belvoir Community Hospital’s one, and only, Neuro-Optometrist, Dr. Robin Winslow was recently named president-elect of NCRFOS.
When asked about this accomplishment Winslow said that her role as president, “with my fellow Board of Directors (BOD) members, is to organize and provide continuing education in the National Capital Region Federal Optometric Society to ensure that high quality of eye care is being maintained for active duty, retirees and family members within the National Capital Region. Our society is the largest, given the amount of military treatment facilities we service from Virginia up through Maryland, and even recently expanding out to Dover Air Force Base.”
In her primary role, specializing in neuro-optometric Vision Rehabilitation at the Intrepid Spirit Center One, Dr. Winslow provides services in a specialty field of vision care rehabilitation that combines neurology and optometry to assess how the brain processes the information sent to it from the eyes. In short, as a specialist in this field, Winslow helps patients to recover, often from traumatic-brain injuries, so that their brain and vision work as one again. Additionally, neuro-optometry also treats diseases and disorders of the nervous system, ocular diseases, and glaucoma.
Having been at Fort Belvoir for five years now, she shares that, “my favorite part is really the patients - what I do not only helps them see but provides functional gains in their daily life that they weren't even aware were vision related. Because I get to see patients regularly I get to know them as humans and learn their stories, not to mention I am blessed to have worked in an interdisciplinary team. Traditionally, optometry can be isolated from the health care team when in fact we can provide extremely valuable services with what we do.”
Extremely valuable services can also be expected of Winslow as she settles in to her newly-elected executive board position as president of the National Capital Region Federal Optometric Society. Congratulations Dr. Winslow, Belvoir hospital is proud of you and your accomplishments!
