PAGO PAGO, American Samoa – The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Shoup (DDG 86) visited the port of Pago Pago, American Samoa to pause from operations in the Western Pacific October 27–30.
Shoup is currently participating in the Oceania Maritime Security Initiative (OMSI) program, a Secretary of Defense program leveraging Department of Defense assets transiting the region to increase the Coast Guard’s maritime domain awareness, ultimately supporting its maritime law enforcement operations in Oceania.
“This is Shoup's second visit to Pago Pago, and we are grateful to visit such a beautiful place and share it with fellow Americans,” said Cmdr. Andy Strickland, commanding officer of Shoup. “The U.S. Navy maintains a presence in the Indo-Pacific region to help preserve peace and security and to further partnerships with friends and allies. All countries in this region have experienced economic prosperity largely because of security and stability that exists at sea.”
American Samoa Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga joined Cmdr. Strickland at a press conference on October 29.
“Thank you for making an effort to protect us,” Moliga said. “That reassures us of the commitment by the U.S. Government to protect our people, our property, our rights, and now you're here to enforce our fishing laws to make sure we are secure. We are very fortunate.”
Shoup departed the port early Tuesday morning to resume patrol.
