RENO, Nev.--Col. Todd Starbuck relinquished command of the Mission Support Group to Col. Glen Martel Oct. 20 at the Nevada Air National Guard Base fuel cell hangar here.

Starbuck will move into the Vice Wing commander position for the 152nd Airlift Wing, as Brig. Gen. Shanna Woyak moves to be the Air National Guard advisor to the chief, Air Force Nurse Corps, in the office of the Surgeon General.

Martel brings with him, his experience from working in the 152nd Civil Engineer Squadron, A1 at State Headquarters in Carson City, Nev., and as the Director of Staff-Air, served as an advisor to the Adjutant General of Nevada, the Assistant Adjutant General for Air, and the Commander of the Nevada Air National Guard.

Martel is committed to getting all tools, training and manning to get the job done, he wants his troops to define a level of excellence that will set a standard for the rest of the United States Air Force to follow.

Martel said to his new unit, “My desired end state is that when Nevada arrives, whether in theater, at a domestic response, or representing the Air Force in a strategic partnership that everyone knows the Silver State has arrived, they understand what Battle Born, Battle Ready truly means and when they talk about excellence the first example they think of is Nevada.”

Currently, the Nevada Air National Guard unit is preparing for one of the most demanding deployment cycles in the unit’s recent history.

About a third of the Airmen in the unit have deployed or are scheduled to deploy this fall and winter to various locations around southwest Asia and Africa. This is a steady stream of deployments, not all happening at once.

The Mission Support Group is responsible for maintaining and supporting the infrastructure of base facilities, readiness, logistics, civil engineering, security, supply, transportation, fuels, contracting, communications, family support, sustainment, education, recreation services and the group that the rest of the base depends upon to prepare for deployments like these. Their responsibility lies in getting the troops qualified in various areas and handling the paperwork that it takes to get them out the door.

While serving as the A1, Martel deployed to Kuwait and was assigned to the Office of Military Cooperation, serving as the J3 Training and Exercise Officer. Additionally, he served on the Joint Planning Group for Nevada and was tasked to sit on the Adaptive Battle Staff rewrite for the J5 as one of two air wing representatives. He has also deployed to Honduras, Canada, Alaska, and Connecticut in support of the Civil Engineer Squadron.
