    FORT GORDON, Ga. – The Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) Det. Fort Gordon announced its 2018 Instructors of the Year (IOY), Oct. 15.

    CIWT Det. Fort Gordon selected Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) 2nd Class Jonathan Cope as Junior IOY, Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) 1st Class Christine Hearn as Mid-grade IOY, and Chief Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Ronald Burk as Senior IOY.

    As a training location for the Center for Information Warfare Training, CIWT Det. Fort Gordon delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services, enabling optimal performance of information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations. CIWT Det. Fort Gordon specializes in training to fleet Sailors in the areas of satellite communications operation and maintenance, maritime cryptologic systems operation and maintenance, and language training graduating approximately 225 students in 30 courses of instruction annually.

    “I am extremely proud of all our instructors here at CIWT Det. Fort Gordon,” said CIWT Det. Fort Gordon’s Officer in Charge Lt. Kevin Lees. “The competition this year was fierce, and our selectees are very well deserving of being recognized as the best.”

    Cope serves as an Apprentice Cryptologic Language Program (ACLP) instructor. He was the lead instructor for a 400-hour course for 11 students with a 100 percent pass rate, preparing first-accession Sailors for the job they will be performing at Navy Information Operations Command Georgia. Additionally, he serves as the Navy Military Training (NMT) assistant leading petty officer (ALPO), the command sponsor coordinator, ACLP division fitness leader, and vice president of the White Hats Association. He also completed five college courses and Military Cryptologic Continuing Education Program (MCCEP) Language Analyst Phase I.

    Hearn is the ACLP leading petty officer, and led 11 ACLP instructors who delivered 3,900 hours of instruction to 76 students. She delivered 412 hours of instruction to 57 Sailors with a pass rate of 100 percent. She also serves as the Arabic ACLP Course supervisor, the Det.’s learning standards officer and educational services officer. Additionally, she completed five graduate courses and completed MCCEP Language Analyst Phase II.

    Burk instructed 21 ACLP students over 194 hours resulting in a 100 percent pass rate. He serves the command fitness leader overseeing a comprehensive physical training program that has kept the Det. at a 100 percent pass rate over the last four Physical Fitness Assessment cycles. As a department leading chief petty officer, he manages 21 instructors and ensures their needs are met while enabling the successful delivery of quality instruction. He was recently selected to pilot the Navy’s Leadership Development Continuum Program and is delivering leadership training to chief petty officers regionally.
