Sailors aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) held a National Hispanic Heritage ceremony on the ship’s mess deck Oct. 9.

According to the official National Hispanic Heritage month website, the observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and later was expanded to a month by former President Ronald Reagan to encompass the celebration of multiple Hispanic countries independence days such as; Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua whose independence dates range from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

During the ceremony, the Battling Bastard crew was treated to a brief lesson in Hispanic history, a Salsa dance performance by Bataan’s own Gunner’s Mate Seaman Johnny Castroosorio and his partner Mikaela Juday, a key note speech by Lt. Mark Rodriguez from air department and a cake cutting.

“The Hispanic community understands the American dream,” said Rodriguez. “The U.S. free market system allows us all to succeed economically, achieve stability and security for our families and to leave our children better off than ourselves. Hispanic leaders continue to advance the Latino communities all over the country across all industries and professions from lawyers to cabinet members, media personalities to powerful business figures.”

When discussing what role heritage and culture will play in continuing advancement for all people, Rodriguez conveyed his favorite quote from Saul Peralta; ‘Your individuality is important, but so is belonging.’ Recognize the parts of your culture that have shaped your past and parts that you want to carry with you into your future.”

For Bataan Sailors, celebrating diverse cultures represented aboard has afforded them the opportunities to enrich their experiences and expand their learning and tolerance of people from different parts of the world while preparing to exit the schedule maintenance availability and gearing up deployment.
