The Kirtland Air Force Base West Fitness Center, re-opened for use, Oct. 1, 2018

The West Fitness Center was closed for renovations to improve functional aspects of the facility. Not only is it the host for physical training on the western side of base, but it also acts as the primary location for all indoor intramural sports and special events.

“The Westside fitness center is a self-contained facility,” said Steve Bowlin, 377th Force Support Squadron, fitness center director. “We are looking at making it more user friendly because we host intramural volleyball, basketball, dodgeball and special events there. It’s utilized five months out of the year just for those events.”

One of the major changes was a fully resurfaced court. According to Bowlin, courts are normally resurfaced every three years and should be recoated every year. The new floor features color coordinated lines and emblems, a light and dark wood mixture, a high school basketball regulation set up and a National College Athletic Association three point line, too. Not only were there basketball upgrades, but a new volleyball setup was installed as well.

In addition to the floor changes, a ventilation project was also completed at the gym. Exhaust fans were put in to remove hot air during the summer and keep air flowing in during the winter.

Bowlin and the FSS aren’t done with upgrading the facility, they plan to add new padding and paint to the walls as the final touches to the project. Bowlin stressed the need for patrons to help him and his staff keep the facilities in the best condition.

“We just ask our patrons to follow the rules of keeping weights off of the (court) floor, we have rubberized floors in the weight lifting area for that, said Bowlin. “We take a lot of pride in the facility and we want to keep the floor as new as possible for as long as possible.”

The courts can be reserved Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. People can contact the West Fitness Center at 505-846-1068 for reservations.
