Naval Medical Center Portsmouth temporary change in service update

    PORTSMOUTH, VA, UNITED STATES

    10.05.2018

    Story by Tia Nichole McMillen

    Naval Medical Forces Atlantic

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) announced this week that prescriptions written by civilian providers for Tricare Select and Tricare for Life members will need to be filled at other Tidewater Military Health System (TMHS) military treatment facilities or by the civilian Tricare network.

In addition, patients may encounter prolonged response and wait times for outpatient prescriptions and some beneficiaries may experience a delay in obtaining primary care and specialty care appointments. These are temporary changes, and we are working diligently to have all services restored to our normal operating capacity as soon as possible.

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is committed to the best patient care and safety in supporting our beneficiaries’ unique needs. To minimize wait times, there are several options available to all beneficiaries. Beneficiaries can utilize any of the three primary military treatment facilities within the TMHS located in Hampton Roads, Virginia: McDonald Army Health Center (MCAHC), Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP), and United States Air Force (USAF) Hospital Langley. The TMHS provides inpatient and outpatient primary, specialty, surgical subspecialty, intensive care, emergency, dental, and health support services to Tricare eligible beneficiaries. You can learn more about TMHS here: https://www.med.navy.mil/sites/nme/tmhs/about.aspx?v=tmhs.

Beneficiaries also have the option to shift their prescriptions from civilian providers to the Tricare network, if desired and at an increased cost. Please work directly with your Tricare representative to determine that cost in advance of having your script filled.

For all other patients, please allow up to five days for processing when submitting a script refill. Take a close look at your prescription refill needs and plan accordingly so you can have your prescription(s) in time.

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth will continue to post updates to inform all beneficiaries of any upcoming changes. The hospital will provide updated information on its website (https://www.med.navy.mil/sites/NMCP/SitePages/home.aspx), on its Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/NMCPortsmouth), through its mobile app which is available for Apple and Android phones, and at various locations in the medical center.
