SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany – More than 125 contestants competed for top shot at the Excellence in Competition M4 shooting event hosted by the 52nd Security Forces Squadron combat arms at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, Oct. 1-4, 2018.

Airmen who shot in the top 10 percent will receive an EIC badge they can wear on their service coat.

“This competition is an opportunity to get Airmen acclimated with the M4 carbine outside the normal Air Force shooting qualification test,” said Staff Sgt. Troy Maycock, 52nd SFS combat arms instructor.

The competition had four different shooting positions: standing unsupported, kneeling unsupported, sitting unsupported, and prone unsupported. Competitors shot a total of 50 rounds, with a possible maximum of 500 points.

“Living in Germany I can’t just bring my privately owned firearms over here and go to a shooting range,” said Lt. Col. David Welt, 52nd Operations Support Squadron director of operations. “For individuals who enjoy going to the firing range like myself, this was a great opportunity.”

Combat arms held a canned food drive, in conjunction with the competition and collected more than $130 worth of items to benefit the Trier Tafel homeless shelter.

“We wanted to do something that would positively impact the local community,” said Maycock. “This event we hosted was the perfect chance to do just that.”

The combat arm instructors plan on hosting the EIC competition for both the M9 Berretta and M4 twice a year.
