Seventeen years ago, the sun rose to harken the morning. As Americans woke, thus began the day that was filled with horrors never to be forgotten.
On September 11, 2018 Sailors aboard the amphibious assault USS Bataan (LHD-5) gathered on the mess decks to remember the attacks on 9-11 and honor those that lost their lives.
The ceremony was hosted by Bataan’s 18 new Chief Petty Officer selects. During the ceremony the Chief Petty Officer select recounted the early moments of that day followed by a timeline of events.
During the ceremony two Chief Petty Officer selects brought out the American flag and folded it as the other 16 took turns reading the timeline of 9/11. After each point of the timeline, a bell was stuck twice as a way to remember each tragic event. The Commanding Officer of the Bataan spoke at the ceremony.
“America endures in the courage of the men and women who serve under our flag,” said Capt. Brad Busch. “Almost two decades of war, this 9/11 generation has answered our country’s call. Today, we honor our brother and sisters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the last 17 years. And we continue to serve in harm’s way, and deploy and to keep our country safe and meet the threats of our time.”
The day of September 11th will forever go down in history as the day terrorism reared its head and attacked America, and the day the War on Terror began.
Seventeen years after small and hateful minds conspired to break us, America stands tall and America stands proud. Guided by the values that sustain us, we will only grow stronger.
Bataan is currently moored at BAE Ship Repair for a schedule maintenance availability.
