Commander, Naval Air Force Reserve Conducts Change of Command Ceremony

    SAN DIEGO, CA, UNITED STATES

    09.28.2018

Story by Petty Officer 1st Class Blake Midnight

    Commander, Navy Reserve Force

Rear Adm. Scott D. Jones relieved Rear Adm. W. Michael Crane as Commander, Naval Air Force Reserve (CNAFR) during a change of command ceremony at Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 57 in San Diego, Sept. 28, 2018.

Vice Adm. DeWolfe Miller, Commander, Naval Air Forces/Commander, Naval Air Force, US Pacific Fleet, served as guest speaker, with Vice Adm. Luke M. McCollum, Chief of Navy Reserve as the presiding officer of the ceremony.

In Crane’s departing remarks he spoke about how he was called to naval aviation.

“The good Lord led me directly to this family we call naval aviation, but that is another story. As I turnover and depart the pattern, I count this tour as a privilege to have served with expert teammates focused on the warfighting readiness of our Naval Air Force Reserve,” Crane said. “Lethality; normalize excellence; every member of each of our squadrons is critical and ready to win the high-end fight.”

Crane was awarded the Legion of Merit during the ceremony.

After assuming command, Jones expressed his life-long love for naval aviation and what an honor it is to take command of CNAFR.

“For me, I dreamed of being a Navy pilot since I was seven years old. I love everything about naval aviation — it has been the pleasure of my life to be involved with an organization that has both dignity and purpose,” Jones said. “To now command Naval Air Force Reserve is an honor for which I have not yet found words. I feel enormously blessed to have the opportunity to continue to serve the Navy I love.”

Jones, a native of Sacramento, California, is a graduate from National University. In 1988, he completed Aviation Officer Candidate School and in 2009 he graduated from the National War College with a Master of Science in national security strategy. A Navy pilot, his most recent assignment was as deputy commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic.

The mission of CNAFR is to maintain the Naval Air Force Reserve in a state of readiness to meet the Fleet Response Plan, fight overseas contingency operations and support the naval aviation enterprise throughout the entire spectrum of peace and war.
