SSC Atlantic Named Best Place to Work in Charleston

Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SSC) Atlantic was named the best place to work in the Lowcountry by the Post and Courier during the Charleston’s Choice Awards hosted Sept. 20 at the American College of Building Arts.

“We are very honored to receive this award– it speaks volumes about our team and the culture they have created at SSC Atlantic,” said Chris Miller, SSC Atlantic executive director.

SSC Atlantic has more than 4,600 employees, to include civil servants and military personnel – of those, almost 3,000 reside in the Lowcountry. In 2018, SSC Atlantic placed an increased emphasis on employee experience to rapidly address the demands of the workforce.

“Our culture of innovation and mutual collaboration thrives because of the efforts of our workforce and their focus on our mission to support the warfighter,” said Miller.

During 2018, SSC Atlantic updated its telework policy to allow for more flexibility and work-life balance, increased focus on career development through tuition assistance opportunities for continuing education and provided additional support for working mothers through the installation of lactation pods.

Additionally, SSC Atlantic provided career progression tools such as SSC Atlantic’s Mid-Career Leadership Program, a seven-month course, that helps develop and apply leadership skills to effect change and instill a teaming culture in the workplace.

SSC Atlantic has also placed a renewed emphasis on recruiting the best and the brightest young professionals nationwide and improving infrastructure, tools and services across the command.

“Through concentrating on the mission, and an understanding that our people are what make our command not only the best place to work, but the best place to serve, we are focusing on creating an environment that allows our team members to deliver cyber warfighting capabilities from seabed to space,” Miller said.

Charleston’s Choice Awards is an annual recognition program that was established by the Post and Courier in 2016. This year, the community voted for their top choices in more than 300 categories, to include food and dining, entertainment, workplace, health and wellness and more. The voting was held in two primary phases and culminated with the awards event where the top nominees in each category were recognized for their achievement.

SSC Atlantic provides systems engineering and acquisition to deliver information warfare capabilities to the naval, joint and national warfighter through the acquisition, development, integration, production, test, deployment, and sustainment of interoperable command, control, communication, computers, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, cyber and information technology capabilities.
