Since September of 2017, nearly 500 of the 148th Fighter Wing members were deployed between three to six months . This was a milestone record for the unit for the most number of members deployed at any one time. Most unit members have now returned home.

On September 13, 2018, the 148th Fighter Wing, partnered with the 185th Air Refueling Wing, and the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve to host the 2018 ‘Boss Lift’. The event provides traditional guard members an opportunity to invite representatives that they feel have supported them through deployments for a chance to understand ‘what they do.’

"We really appreciate all of the employers that support our guardsmen. Especially in a year where we have served our country with so many of our members being deployed and away from their workplace,” said Col. Troy Havener, 148th Fighter Wing Vice Commander.

The day involved a base tour, informational briefs, and a K-135 Stratotanker on-board flight from the Iowa Air National Guard 185th Air Refueling in Sioux City, Iowa.

One traditional guardsman, Tech. Sgt. Nancy Hanson, a headquarters orderly room non-commissioned officer, invited her manager Kevin Wu to the base. Hanson and Wu work at the University of Minnesota – Duluth, who has been a Guard and Reserve friendly employer.

“This was a great chance to have my boss come out and gain a greater understanding of what they are helping to support,” said Hanson, who works as a Systems Administrator with Wu.

“Nancy is a great employee and does a fantastic job. She is missed in the office when she is at drill,” said Wu, who is a UMD Systems and Development Information Technology and Systems & Services, “It was an interesting day and fascinating to see all the things she is involved with – I am happy our community is so active in supporting our Guard and Reservists.”

"The part time guardsman is really the epitome of service before self in that they have a full and busy life as an employee and a family member, but they also are a full time member of the military,” Havener said.
