SSC Pacific honored for Tech Transfer efforts at FLC Far West Regional Awards

SAN DIEGO — Two teams of researchers from Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) were honored for their efforts at the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer (FLC) Mid-Continent and Far West Regional Meeting in Oklahoma City, Aug. 29.

Both teams were recognized with Outstanding Technology Development awards. Outstanding Technology Development awards are given to a laboratory and staff for a promising technology development to: solve problems; satisfy markets and consumers; create patents and awards; or any area related to the above.

Team winners included Anna Leese de Escobar, Susan Berggren, Marcio de Andrade, Benjamin Taylor, Teresa Emery, and Michael O’Brian for their “High-Temperature Superconducting SQUID Array Radio Frequency Sensor” project. The multidisciplinary team at SSC Pacific’s Cryogenic Exploitation of Radio Frequency (CERF) lab is developing next-generation radio frequency (RF) technologies (sensors, filters, multiplexers, amplifiers, etc.) for use throughout the RF receiver chain - from antenna, through analog preprocessing and conditioning, to digital conversion and digital signal processing.

Also recognized were Stephanie Venn-Watson and Eric Jensen for their efforts with the “Use of Heptadecanoic Acid to Detect, Prevent, and Treat Metabolic Syndrome, Anemia, and Inflammation” research. For more than 60 years, the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program has provided outstanding care to a population of approximately 80 bottlenose dolphins that provide critical force protection services. The dolphins are housed at SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) under the care of SSC Pacific and contractor veterinarians and marine mammal specialists. Office of Naval Research (ONR) funding has supported over $4.5M in clinical research in the last several years to discover novel ways to prevent and treat metabolic conditions in Navy dolphins.
