FORT STEWART, Ga. – Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Air Field Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) is scheduled to host its annual Gold Star Mother’s day dinner and Lights of Love ceremony Sep. 29, 2018.

The dinner will begin at 6 p.m., at Club Stewart, said Angela Murphey, SOS financial counselor. Following the dinner, families can head over to Cottrell field for the Lights of Love ceremony which begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Gold Star Mother program began in 1928 to honor the mothers whose sons or daughters died in World War I. In 1942 membership was opened to mothers who lost their children during World War II and again after the Korean conflict.

Both events are an opportunity for the Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield community to honor surviving mothers and Families of fallen service members, said Murphy. All surviving Families are encouraged to attend.

During the Lights of Love ceremony, Families and loved ones will gather to place decorated paper lanterns on the field in remembrance of the fallen Soldiers.

“Anyone interested in honoring a fallen service member is invited to Cottrell Field to place a luminary bag in the light display,” said Murphy.

To reserve a seat for the Gold Star Mother’s Day dinner, RSVP before Sep. 26 by contacting the SOS team at 912-435-9633.
