NORTH ATLANTIC – The Icelandic Minster of Foreign Affairs, Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson, and ambassadors from Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom traveled aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) Sept. 19 to observe operations and meet with command leaders and Sailors.
Canadian Ambassador to Iceland, Ambassador Anne Tamara Lorre; German Ambassador to Iceland, Ambassador Herbet Beck; and United Kingdom Ambassador to Iceland, Ambassador Michael Nevin, were joined by U.S. Charge d’ Affairs to Iceland, Jill Esposito, and five members of the Icelandic parliament for the embark.
“We were honored to host a delegation from the Icelandic government aboard Harry S. Truman (CVN 75),” said Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 8, Rear Adm. Gene Black. “We value the opportunity to engage with leaders from an old and trusted ally – a NATO charter member – and showcase the flexible warfighting capability that a carrier strike group brings to bear in support of our common interests.
For more than 70 years, the U.S. and European allies and partners have advanced freedom, openness, peace and prosperity around the world. USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group’s presence secures vital European sea lanes that underpin global commerce and prosperity.
“As one of the founding members of NATO, we have a strong connection and commitment to our allies,” said Minister Thordarson. “We are a non-military member of NATO, but we participate in traditional defense actives. So this was a great opportunity.”
Minster Thordarson added Iceland and its NATO partners are committed to working together and ready to adapt to new challenges as they arise.
“No doubt – history has shown the importance of NATO,” exclaimed Minister Thordarson. “And history will continue to show it is equally as important now as it will be in the future.”
Currently operating in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations, Harry S. Truman will continue to foster cooperation with regional allies and partners, strengthen regional stability, and remain vigilant, agile and dynamic.
