American Red Cross: a community helping the community

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany -- The American Red Cross office at Ramstein is looking for volunteers to help fulfill its mission and is hosting a volunteer job fair Sept. 21, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the fourth floor of the Ramstein Red Cross office, building 2118.

The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and through the generosity of donors.

The volunteer-driven organization provides more than notifications of emergencies to service members and their families.

Amy Teeter, Ramstein American Red Cross regional program director, said their office offers programming for disaster preparedness. They also facilitate emergency communications, teach children how to wash their hands to help stop the spread of disease, host CPR classes, and refer volunteers for other organizations within the Ramstein community.

“There are a lot of ways you can impact the community as a volunteer,” she said. “You can go to the legal office and help process paperwork, or you can be at the library helping them shelve books or read to children.”

Each program the Red Cross offers has a volunteer lead. While some volunteers dedicate up to 40 hours a week, individuals may offer as much time as they desire.

Helping the community is the primary goal for volunteers, but Andrea Defibaugh, Ramstein American Red Cross field office coordinator, said there are other reasons why someone may offer their time.

“I started as a volunteer,” said Defibaugh. “It was very difficult finding a job here, but I wanted to keep my resumé built up. The programs that we have here are legitimate and will help do that.”

Teeter and Defibaugh said another reason to volunteer is the ability to network. Red Cross volunteers will meet many people in the community who can help them discover opportunities, especially while living overseas where everything is unfamiliar.

The Red Cross is currently looking for volunteers in all facets of their organization. Some critical positions include special events lead, which helps organize events for other organizations, and disaster team lead, which coordinates various disaster preparedness functions.

“Anytime you’re volunteering for the Red Cross you are helping your career, your education, your skillset, and most importantly you’re helping others,” said Teeter. “We’re a community helping the community.”
