SAN DIEGO – Nine Sailors from Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet, Carrier Strike Group 15 (CSG 15) and Tactical Training Group Pacific (TTGP) earned the title of "chief" during a chief petty officer (CPO) pinning ceremony held at U.S. 3rd Fleet headquarters, Sept. 14.

The ceremony followed a six-week training period known as CPO 365 Phase Two, which began when the CPO advancement results were released, August 8. During Phase Two, the Chiefs Mess introduced those who were selected for advancement to chief petty officer to challenges designed to build on their leadership skills and provide a better understanding of what it means to be a Navy chief. Phase Two also included training on the history and traditions of a Navy chief, including the CPO Mess, tough physical challenges, mentorship, and many other responsibilities.

Vice Adm. John Alexander, commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet, said the newly pinned chiefs should be proud of the accomplishments and sacrifices they’ve made that have gotten them to this point in their career.

"Chief petty officers are routinely sought out by junior enlisted, and junior and senior officers alike. First and foremost, they are the deckplate leaders. They possess the ability to inspire and motivate. They set the tone of the command. They are the experts of the Navy," said Alexander, an honorary chief.

Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet Command Master Chief Jack Callison said it is now the newly pinned chiefs’ responsibility to represent the Chiefs Mess and train the Sailors shaping tomorrow’s Navy.

"These Sailors have been tested,” said Callison. “They’ve been accepted, and now they’re Navy chief petty officers. Being a chief in the Navy is one of the most significant milestones a Sailor can accomplish, and I know these chiefs will do great things for our Navy."

After receiving their anchors, each chief also received a combination cover signifying their new positions of leadership and responsibility.

"This is not only the culmination of my work, but the work of everyone I have ever served with," said Chief Information System Technician Thanh Nguyen, of 3rd Fleet, who was pinned during the ceremony. "There is no way I would be able to reach this point without the mentors and mentees who I have worked with along the way."

Chief Information System Technician Nicholas Reis of CSG 15, who also received his anchors today, said this esperience is one of the most memorable and special moments of his life.

“There has been no experience in my Navy career like this,” said Reis. “This is the absolute top experience so far. Now it is time to go to work and elevate the Sailors who will be pinned at this time next year.”

Chief Information System Technicians Alfred Delgado and Nguyen, of 3rd Fleet, Chief Cryptologic Technician (Collection) Gina Jenkins, Chief Culinary Specialist Jeremy Myers, Chief Cryptologic Technician (Technical) Adam Shelar and Reis of CSG 15, Chief Operations Specialists Jorge Gallegos and Luis Lopez, and Chief Intelligence Specialist Edward Holcombe, of TTGP were all welcomed to the fleet Chief’s Mess.

U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy and constantly coordinates with U.S. 7th Fleet to plan and execute missions that promote ongoing peace, security, and stability throughout the Pacific theater of operations.
