Rededication takes place for Global War on Terrorism Memorial at National Infantry Museum

This rededication meets the promise made in 2017 that for each year the Global War on Terror continues, new names will be added to the memorial so that no Soldier’s sacrifice will ever be forgotten. COLUMBUS, Ga. (Sept. 13, 2018) – The National Infantry Museum at Columbus, Georgia, held the inaugural rededication of its Global War on Terrorism Memorial Sept. 8.

This rededication meets the promise made in 2017 that for each year the Global War on Terror continues, new names will be added to the memorial so that no Soldier’s sacrifice will ever be forgotten.

Patriot riders lined the sidewalks of the National Infantry Museum last week, welcoming Gold Star Families and the Fort Benning community to the rededication of the Global War on Terrorism Memorial.

Twenty-eight names of the recently fallen have been added to the memorial’s black granite panels since its unveiling and dedication in October of last year.

Gold Star Family members, active-duty service members from Fort Benning, Georgia, and retired military and members of the public attended.

“It is our responsibility – our responsibility – those of us safely at home, to honor their service with the compassion and dignity rightfully due to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice,” said retired Lt. Gen. Tom Metz, the featured speaker at the event.

During his career, Metz served as the director of the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization at the Pentagon, the deputy commanding general and chief of staff of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Eustis, Virginia, and the commanding general of III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas.

“Who are the service members fighting war for us?” asked Metz of the audience. “The answer to that question is simple. They are the best of Americans.”

Each year the ceremony is scheduled to take place the first Saturday after Labor Day.
