On the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Soldiers from across America’s First Corps along with first responders from the Joint Base Lewis-McChord community gathered to honor the American’s who lost their lives on that fateful day, 17 years ago.

First responders honored the sacrifice of those who paid the ultimate price protecting and defending the nation. The event showed how important it is for communities to rally together and support one another said speakers at the ceremony.

The special relationship I Corps has with its first responders allows the community to thrive, said I Corps Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Gary Volesky, who spoke at the event.

Volesky spoke of the contributions that the men and women of America’s First Corps have made defending the country in the Global War on Terror.

Since that infamous day first responders and service members have continued their service honoring those who paid the ultimate price.

This shows the legacy of September 11th is not that the nation was attacked, but rather how American’s from all walks of life can come together to help one another in service of their country and communities, Volesky said.

JBLM Police Chief Robert J. Miller used the occasion to highlight the first responders who, inspired by the legacy of 9/11, continue to carry out their jobs and serve communities such as JBLM.

“These heroes thought nothing of their own safety and willingly laid down their lives for their fellow citizens,” said Miller. “Remember the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation’s freedom and security.”

Chief Kenneth E. Rhault, the JBLM Fire Chief, echoed this sentiment as he addressed those who gathered in remembrance.

“We all continue to serve, no matter the uniform you have chosen to wear, we must honor their sacrifices in what we do each and everyday,” said Rhault. “Do not lose sight of why we are here. “Use the sacrifices of others as the compass that guides us back to serving others and not ourselves.”
