On Tuesday, July 31, approximately 70 noncommissioned officers and senior noncommissioned officers traveled from Nevada Air National Guard Base here in Reno to McGhee-Tyson Air National Guard Base in Maryville, Tenn. To attend professional development training.
The purpose of the trip was to teach leadership skills to the upcoming supervisors in the Nevada Air National Guard. The Nevada Air National Guard State Command Chief, Chief Master Sgt. Michael Drisdale, said, “This trip was our maiden voyage on much needed training to enhance the upcoming leaders in the Nevada Air National Guard and I would say it was a huge success. The trip across the country was well worth it because our Airmen are starved for professional development.”
Each Airman was assigned to one of two teams, the blue team and the silver team. Over the two days of training, they attended courses for: public speaking, leading with emotional intelligence, time management, bullet writing, mentoring and unconscious bias.
One Civil Engineer Squadron Airman, Staff Sgt. Lea Laney said, “I thought the classes were really different, some overlapped from Airman Leadership School but some of them were really different. Such as, the unconscious bias class, it was really good. The different classes were great because they focused on more of the soft skills that really are the basis of being a good leader.”
The overall consensus from the attendees was that the training was too short.
Staff Sgt. Kristine Mireles from the 152nd Intelligence Squadron shared, “The training was phenomenal and we got a lot out of it, really I just wish we had a little more time to discuss it and go deeper into the material that was presented because that would’ve made it more valuable. I would also would’ve liked more time for team building events. Overall, it was a great trip.”
The local double-A baseball team, the Tennessee Smokies, even hosted the entire group for a ‘mandatory fun’ barbecue.
Drisdale said, “In response to the demand, next year’s trip is going to be a day or two longer and include some more team building and possibly longer classes.”
