Military working dog teams from RAF Mildenhall showcased their capabilities during the Newmarket Fire and Police Fun Day Sept. 2, 2018, in Newmarket, England.

The event was held for families to learn about emergency services within the local area in a fun and friendly environment.

The MWD demonstrations gave the local community a better sense of the capabilities these teams contribute to the 100th Air Refueling Wing, as well as providing an opportunity for additional training.

"We conduct demos to showcase the abilities and obedience of the military working dog. They perform the tasks and commands for any scenario that we might encounter while on daily patrols," said Tech. Sgt. Kelly Webster, 100th SFS MWD kennel master.

During the demonstration, Staff Sgt. Kristina Santos, 100th SFS MWD handler and MWD Ukkie, performed basic biting techniques, while Staff Sgt. Michael Kovach, 100th SFS handler and MWD Brock, demonstrated the “six-phases of aggression.”

The “six-phases of aggression” is fundamental training the teams perform on a daily basis. It involves a field interview, pursuit of attack, search, escort and a standoff.

Sgt. Steven Duncan, Newmarket Fire and Police member, was coordinator of the fun day.

“We wanted to promote the work of services in general. Yes, it was police and fire fun day that we were sorting out,” he said. “Because of you all being local, we thought it only fair to get you involved and it was very well received. A lot of the families really enjoyed it. It’s nice to see dogs grabbing bad guys and putting them down on the deck.”

Though this was the first event of its kind the Newmarket Fire and Police station held, they plan to hold similar events on an annual basis.
