Public Notice of Demolitions at Jefferson Barracks

WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, MO, UNITED STATES

    08.24.2018

Story by Senior Master Sgt. Mary-Dale Amison

    131st Bomb Wing

WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Missouri – The Missouri Air National Guard’s (MOANG) 131st Bomb Wing (131BW) and the National Guard Bureau (NGB) is proposing to demolish four vacant buildings at Jefferson Barracks Air National Guard Station, located along Interstate 255/U.S. Highway 50, approximately 12 miles south of downtown St. Louis.

Several of these buildings were previously identified for demolition in the 2008 Environmental Assessment (EA) conducted by the Missouri Army National Guard (MOARNG) prior to the construction of the Armed Forces Reserve Center (Building 24) at Jefferson Barracks. The four buildings – numbers 42, 45, 46 and 47 – were originally built as cavalry stables in 1895-1896, and converted to NCO quarters in 1908. They are currently uninhabitable and maintenance costs and/or repairs are prohibitive to their effective use.

The MOANG is consulting with the Missouri State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), and also invites public comment on the proposed demolitions.

Please submit your comments in writing to the 131st Bomb Wing Public Affairs Office via email to 131bw.pa@us.af.mil (Attn: 131BW Environmental Manager) or via U.S. Mail to:

    131st Bomb Wing Public Affairs

Emails must be received by 5 p.m. on Sept. 7, 2018, and mailed comments must be postmarked Sept. 7, 2018. All received comments will be provided to the 131st Bomb Wing Environmental Manager for consideration.
