WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Missouri – The Missouri Air National Guard’s (MOANG) 131st Bomb Wing (131BW) and the National Guard Bureau (NGB) is proposing to demolish four vacant buildings at Jefferson Barracks Air National Guard Station, located along Interstate 255/U.S. Highway 50, approximately 12 miles south of downtown St. Louis.
Several of these buildings were previously identified for demolition in the 2008 Environmental Assessment (EA) conducted by the Missouri Army National Guard (MOARNG) prior to the construction of the Armed Forces Reserve Center (Building 24) at Jefferson Barracks. The four buildings – numbers 42, 45, 46 and 47 – were originally built as cavalry stables in 1895-1896, and converted to NCO quarters in 1908. They are currently uninhabitable and maintenance costs and/or repairs are prohibitive to their effective use.
The MOANG is consulting with the Missouri State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), and also invites public comment on the proposed demolitions.
