GROTON, Conn. – Electronic Technician (Submarine Communications) 2nd Class David Cheney, a native from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, currently serves as an instructor at Information Warfare Training Command Virginia Beach (IWTC), Learning Site Groton, Connecticut onboard Naval Submarine Base New London.

Cheney enlisted in the Navy in July of 2011, and following his completion of basic training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, he reported to his first duty station aboard USS Newport News (SSN 750). There, he worked as an electronic technician (submarine radio), more commonly known as a radioman. As a radioman his responsibilities included analyzing electronic communications, jamming enemy radar signals, deciphering information gathered, and maintaining constant submarine communications in the world’s roughest environments.

Additionally, he ensured the maintenance and safekeeping of operational cryptographic-keying material. This allowed for sending and receiving vital mission essential naval message traffic, maintaining electronic and physical security of classified information, and maintaining and repairing all communication and cryptographic equipment. While aboard, he also qualified as an enlisted submarine warfare specialist.

In his current position, he teaches key management infrastructure (KMI) operating account managers the skills required to defend the United States’ most secure and vital information. Cheney has exclusively taught 58 students ranging from paygrades E-5 to O-3 through eight classes and with no student failures, all who have gone on to successfully manage over 200 KMI accounts.

“Serving in the Navy, particularly the Submarine Force, is one of the most rewarding job experiences I have ever been granted,” shared Cheney. “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t have the chance to learn or work with equipment the rest of the world will never see or operate. I have been all over the world, seen multiple countries that I know I would have never been afforded the opportunity without the Navy.”

He also has a rich family history of military service, with many of his family members having previously served or currently serving in the armed forces, and he is honored to carry on the proud family tradition of honor and sacrifice.

“The military has been a part of my family as far as I can look back, whether it be Air Force, Army or Navy,” added Cheney. “Myself, in the Navy, and my sister as well as her husband, in the Army, are all currently serving in the world’s finest military.”

IWTC Virginia Beach currently offers 65 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology, and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 280 military, civilian, and contract members who train over 6,400 students every year at five training sites in the Hampton Roads area. It is one of four school houses for Center for Information Warfare Training and also oversees learning sites at Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut to continue aligning Information Warfare community training.

IWTC Virginia Beach, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel, preparing them to conduct information warfare (IW) across the full spectrum of military operations.
