    Story by Sgt. Sarah Kirby

278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Tennessee Army National Guard

Tennessee Army National Guard’s State Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Gentry visited Soldiers assigned to Task Force Raider during their pre-deployment training at Fort Hood, Texas, August 12, and awarded select Soldiers a challenge coin for their devotion to duty and exemplary performance as seen by their chain of command.

“I was really surprised to be coined,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Ryan Duginski, a Clarksville, Tenn. native, a M1 Abrams master gunner. “It’s a huge honor especially from him. I love my job and what I do. I try my best to make everything run smoother and take as much stress off the guys actually on the ground running the tanks.”

The awarded Task Force Raiders were nominated by their direct supervisors and approved by Task Force Raider Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Haynes. “You don’t deserve anything from the Army you haven’t earned,” said Gentry to Soldiers of Task Force Raider. “If you haven’t earned it, you won’t get it. You earn promotions and awards through doing the right thing, completing schooling, keeping yourself healthy and maintaining discipline.”

Gentry represents and advises the Assistant Adjutant General - Army on matters pertaining to policies and actions that affect enlisted Soldiers.

During his visit to Task Force Raider Soldiers, he answered questions ranging from topics such as pay discrepancies, health care coverage, new noncommissioned officer education system and the impending Army Combat Fitness Test.

Command Sgt. Maj. Gentry’s final words were full of encouragement and advice all can appreciate.

“Lastly, always maintain your discipline it’s what separates you apart from others,” said Gentry. “Surround yourself with good people that have similar successful goals as you do. I’ve only surrounded myself with the best and so far it’s taken me all the way to the top.”
