FORT STEWART, Ga. – The 3rd Infantry Division and garrison team welcomed newly arrived command team members, senior leaders and their spouses, Aug. 17, with an orientation and tour of Fort Stewart, Georgia.
Those in attendance of the event learned of available post resources and participated in a tour of several facilities.
“This is a great opportunity for everybody to learn about our installation and to get to know new members of the team,” said Maj. Gen. Lee Quintas, 3rd Infantry Division commanding general.
Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel Hendrex, 3rd ID command sergeant major, informed the newcomers and their Families of the Marne Division history and explained the significance of the term “Marne Express.”
“I would just tell you to embrace it,” Hendrex said. “The last time I was in the 3rd Infantry Division, I was a young sergeant. I came through here, and I thought it was the fastest place I had ever gone to. I literally got to the post and left. I find it interesting that my story of coming back to the 3rd ID with the Family is not much different today.”
Hendrex encouraged the new Soldiers to visit the 3rd ID Museum, which reopened in 2017. He mentioned the history of decorated World War II veterans such as 2nd Lt. Audie Murphy and 1st Lt. Garlin Murl Conner.
“We have an incredible museum; there are 54 other incredible (Medal of Honor recipients) out there that you and your Soldiers can use as vignettes of ‘this is what we put at the bar of excellence,’ to include across almost every single branch and (military occupational specialty) in the United States Army,” Hendrex said.
Following the briefing, the spouses were led on a tour, and visited Winn Army Community Hospital; the Army Wellness Center; the Child Development Center; the Army Community Services campus and the education center to learn what each had to offer their Soldiers and Families.
Command teams took a separate tour and visited the military police station; the Rail Marshalling Area; the Training Aids, Devices, Simulators and Simulations; and the Fires Desk at Range Control.
They also visited Jordan Fitness Center and discussed incoming equipment to support Soldiers training for the new Army Combat Fitness Test.
Quintas said the purpose of the tour was to arm the new command teams and their spouses with information; to introduce them to all the “action figures” who exist and get things done on post; to empower them as community leaders of the installation; and to remind everybody why the 3rd ID is here.
“As leaders here at Fort Stewart, Hunter Army Airfield, I want to make sure that you have the information to know what the capabilities are, what the resources are and also what limitations exist here at FSGA, HAAF, and the local community,” Quintas said. “You are empowered to make changes and get things done. It is not enough to identify a problem; community leaders solve problems.”
