SILVERDALE, Wash. – Multiple installations around Navy Region Northwest were notified by official U.S. Navy message traffic as recipients of the Secretary of the Navy’s Energy Excellence Award, Aug. 2.
The Secretary of the Navy annually grants energy conservation awards to various units and activities of the Navy and Marine Corps. These awards are for outstanding energy conservation and energy management accomplishments during the preceding fiscal year.
The air and seagoing commands of Naval Base Kitsap (NBK), Naval Station Everett (NSE), and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI) were selected for a gold level award, denoting an awareness of and compliance with the Department of the Navy’s energy management directives and goals.
"The Northwest has a strong program with a healthy energy awareness outreach program via internal news, reader board messages, social media, newspaper articles, monthly energy tips, and recently a friendly competition to building occupants to reduce energy consumption.” said Capt. Alan Schrader, commanding officer, NBK. “This, combined with innovative and creative project development, has allowed us to reduce energy consumption by 30 percent and water consumption by 50 percent."
Chris Taylor, installation energy manager for NASWI, agreed with the efforts put forth by each installation to obtain the yearly award.
"It is inspiring to know that our work makes NASWI more resilient and efficient - that over a million dollars a year in reduced utility costs now supports our mission, and that so many people, from skipper to public works to individual building managers, are supporting the program,” he said. “I'm looking forward to saving another million dollars a year!"
Setting out to achieve these goals through energy conservation, in an ever-changing and adapting military, is not an easy task, but each command’s commitment to effective energy management keeps the Department of the Navy on track to secure 50 percent of its total energy demand from alternative sources by 2020.
"We are honored to be recognized for our team's ongoing commitment to energy conservation and sustainability, which is fundamental to the Navy's mission readiness,” said Capt. Mike Davis, commanding officer, NSE. “We'll continue to make this a priority across diverse installation programs, employing new technology and encouraging smart use of our energy resources."
Naval Magazine (NAVMAG) Indian Island, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) & Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF), and Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport took home gold awards as well for their annual efforts.
“The team at NAVMAG Indian Island has had great successes over the years in reducing our energy consumption each year and I’m proud of all the work the team does to balance our national defense mission and our environmental stewardship responsibilities,” said Cmdr. Rocky Pulley, NAVMAG commanding officer.
Global capability and reach is one of the foundations of the Navy and its mission. In order to efficiently pursue that mission, it takes an equal amount of effort from shore-based installations to conserve energy, as well.
The Pacific Northwest's largest Naval shore facility and one of Washington State's largest industrial installations, PSNS & IMF, was also honored this year. According to Matthew Bailey, PSNS & IMF spokesman, since 2015, the shipyard has added over 1,500 jobs, increasing its number of employees by 12 percent, while seeing an energy consumption increase of only 0.5 percent during the same period.
“This honor represents the culmination of our entire team’s efforts to effectively and efficiently use energy in meeting our mission,” said PSNS & IMF Executive Director Richard Tift. “These efforts don’t just save taxpayer dollars; they also help to preserve precious natural resources. These are responsibilities we take very seriously.”
