FORT LEE, Va. (Aug. 20, 2018) -- The lion roars ... again.
Lima Company, 244th Quartermaster Battalion, was reactivated during a ceremony Aug. 15 on the unit grounds. Among those present for the formalities were Col. Gregory Townsend and Command Sgt. Maj. Lisa Haney, the 23rd QM Brigade commander and CSM, respectively. Also present were battalion leaders Lt. Col. Daniel L. Horn and CSM DuJuan D. Warren.
The “Lima Lions” had been hibernating in a deactivated status since 2016. Called forth to duty once again, it will be responsible for the health and welfare of advanced individual training students attending the 92Y Unit Supply Specialist and 92A Automated Logistical Specialist courses. It presently has a balance of 160 Soldiers.
Horn, who presented remarks for the event, said the reactivation was necessary to relieve other battalion companies of carrying the burden of housing and caring for an increasing number of troops.
“This is a great thing for the Guardian Battalion,” he said. “Lima is providing us with the ability to reduce our cadre-to-student ratio, which is going to enhance our readiness from day one,” he said.
Prior to the reactivation, said Horn, the cadre-to-student ratio was 1-60. It is now 1-40.
“We also have a lot more drill sergeants than we’ve had in the past,” he added with the acknowledgement that Lima Co. will need them. Its personnel rolls are due swell to roughly 250 within a week.
Capt. Jose Ramirez, who along with 1st Sgt. La’Tangie Dumas forms the Lima leadership duo, said he is honored to take on his new duties.
“I am privileged to lead American sons and daughters and make a positive impact on their lives,” said the native of Rincon, Puerto Rico. “It means a lot to me, and I’m going to do my best. I know there will be some tough days, but with the first sergeant by my side, and the professionalism of the drill sergeants and instructors, I’m going to be fine.”
Lima Co. includes 13 drill sergeants and 16 instructors on its personnel rolls. The Guardian Battalion is now comprised of five student companies and it maintains administrative control of the QM School’s Logistics Training Department, which supports all 92A and 92Y training.
