YAVORIV, Ukraine – Tennessee Army National Guard soldiers from the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment participate in the Polish Armed Forces Day festivities, Aug. 15. The Polish Armed Forces Day is a national holiday in Poland commemorating the anniversary of the victory over Soviet Russia at the Battle of Warsaw in 1920.

The Polish Armed Forces Day festivities included an opening ceremony followed by a competition and concluded with a barbeque. Representing teams from the United States, Poland, Canada, Ukraine and Lithuania competed in a series of timed events testing soldiers physical and intellectual abilities. Some of the events in the competition included a candy eating contest, box jumps, kettlebell swings, an ambulatory litter carry, a vehicle push and knowledge of all competing countries rank structures.

The United States took first place followed by Ukraine in second place and Lithuania in third place.

Crowds gathered to celebrate Polish Armed Forces Day and soldiers from the 278th ACR appreciated the opportunity to participate in these events.

“I was honored to be a part of Polish Armed Forces Day and to be able to compete in the events. Also, it was fun to compete with other nations and to celebrate with the Polish soldiers” says Sgt. Carlos Pineda.

The top three winners received a trophy from the Polish who hosted the competition and 278th ACR Commander, Col. Jimmie Cole individually recognized all participants in the competition.

After the competition, representatives from the participating countries bonded over a barbecue provided by the Polish.

A Polish tank brigade, which is also deployed at Yavoriv Combat Training Center, is named after a famous national hero of Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and the United States. Tadeusz Kosciuszko is a military leader, who fought in wars from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s struggles against Russia and Prussia to the American Revolutionary War on the U.S. side.
