KIHEI, Hawaii – Four words describe Buck Joiner and his mission in life: integrity, commitment, energy and vision. His business card says these four simple words at the top followed by “here to help” at the bottom. And that is precisely what Buck is doing for a military medical training mission called Tropic Care Maui County 2018.

During a free moment at Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church, the temporary site of a U.S. military Innovative Readiness Training clinic, Joiner sits at a picnic table teaching military service members the proper way to prepare and eat fresh mangoes grown at his home here in Maui. A local volunteer and Kihei community booster, Joiner is teaming up with these service members to help provide no cost medical services to Maui County.

Tropic Care Maui County 2018 is led by the Air National Guard and supported by members of the Air Force, Army, Navy Reserve, and Marine Corps Reserve and community. Health clinics at Central Maui, Kihei, Lahaina, Hana, Molokai, and Lanai will run from August 11-19, providing medical, dental, and vision services. Tropic Care Maui County 2018 provides medical troops and support personnel “hands-on” readiness training to prepare for future deployments while providing direct and lasting benefits to the people of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai.

Community volunteers like Joiner make this effort possible. This is the second time Joiner is volunteering for Tropic Care. He previously volunteered for the 2013 Tropic Care mission.

Joiner has lived in Maui for over 35 years. After a long career as a nuclear engineer, where Joiner first operated with the military when he helped design and build the nuclear power plant for the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier, Joiner found himself in Maui for a visit to see some friends and decided, “It doesn’t get any better than this.” Joiner’s extensive volunteer service within the community has given him a reputation for helping his fellow Maui residents.

“Because I’ve been here forever and because I lead, I ended up with the title of ‘charge,’ not ‘in charge,’ just plain old ‘charge.’ I’ve got the heart and I’ve got the head for the job,” Joiner said. “My purpose is to do logistics. I do the grunt work to free up the doctors (time) to do their work.”

Joiner also uses his engineering skills and background to make prosthetics, using his 3D printer, for Maui residents, and he takes particular pride in making prosthetics for children.
