The 665th Movement Control Team, 25th Transportation Battalion, Materiel Support Command-Korea, 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command hosted the inaugural Gulo-Gulo Challenge, Aug. 10, 2018 at Camp Carroll, Waegwan, Republic of Korea.
The competition’s “Gulo-Gulo” name loosely translates into “hungry wolverine” in Latin, and it pays homage to the 665th MCT’s nickname and motto, which are, “Wolverines, Stay Hungry.”
The 665th MCT organized and hosted the Gulo-Gulo Challenge, which featured Soldiers from three battalions of the Materiel Support Command-Korea: the 551st Inland Cargo Transfer Company of the 498th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, the 84th Ordnance Company of the 6th Ordnance Battalion, and two teams from the 665th MCT of the 25th Transportation Battalion.
The teams were tested on various maneuver and transportation management techniques, along with a series of physical fitness events, land navigation, and common Soldier tasks.
The competition was held in such a way that the team that took the least time in completing all the given tasks were awarded 1st Place and the challenge’s trophy. But, according to some competitors, a key gain for all involved was integrating and working with Soldiers from other units around the peninsula.
"We don't get a lot of chances to interact with our sister battalions, so I think it's pretty cool we're getting that here," said 2nd Lt. Joshua Mayer, a movement control officer for the 665th MCT. "We have 6th Ordinance and 498th here, so our Soldiers get a chance to interact and see how each other operate."
The event was physically challenging, as competitors began with a march starting at Camp Carroll Field that led out of the gate and up a mountainside to a peak named Hill 303, and then back down into camp to the next event at 665th’s motor pool. During the march, Soldiers hustled to achieve the best time possible as they raced while avoiding slips and falls through the mountainous region.
“When I was climbing up the mountain, there were moments when I wanted to give up,” said Pfc. Jang, Eun Seok, who is a Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army Soldier with the 665th MCT. “But every time, my lieutenant gave me motivation to continue, and because of him, I was able to complete the ruck march. I enjoyed the experience because I got to learn about teamwork and motivation, and it was overall a meaningful experience as a KATUSA participant.”
After the march, Soldiers participated in various team events that included a tire change, weapons familiarization, team maneuver and Medivac course. The events enhanced Soldier skills necessary for providing logistics and mission support according to the organizers.
“We just wanted to be able to get a fun challenge that would bring together different teams from our brigade,” said 2nd Lt. Sherry Kim, executive officer of the 665th MCT and the Officer in Charge of the Gulo-Gulo Challenge. “Our goal is that by the end of this competition, that whoever takes home the trophy whether that’s our team or a different team, would decide to also hold a challenge the next year and that this trophy would keep getting passed down.”
At the end of the event, the 551st ICTC, 498th CSSB was awarded with the Warrior Challenge Trophy for coming in 1st place. The trophy was presented to the team by Lt. Col. Peter B. Nienhaus, battalion commander of the 25th Transportation Battalion.
