San Diego — Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) Pediatric Department held a physical rodeo, Aug.14 to ensure military children were prepared for the upcoming school year.
During the physical rodeo, doctors, nurses, and hospital corpsman performed school physicals, sports physicals and immunizations for pediatric patients.
“We performed as many physicals as possible throughout the day,” said Cmdr. Katherine Swartz, a physician in the pediatrics department. “All kids ages 4 through 18 were welcomed to the rodeo. We had nutritionists, social workers, healthy steps, immunizations, and pediatric cardiology all available to the patients.”
General Pediatrics sees hundreds of patients annually for coughs and sneezes to school checkups and sports physicals, but the influx of physicals and immunizations come toward the end of every summer before the kids return to school. The goal of the physicals rodeo was getting as many patients’ physicals done in as short a time as possible.
“It was a great feeling to be a part of such a fun and productive event,” said Hospitalman Hunter Sanders. “It really showed how our teamwork within the department can get so much done in a fun way. The kids seemed to enjoy it as much as we did.”
By the end of the event, more than 90 physicals were performed and more than 100 patients were seen.
NMCSD’s mission is to prepare to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver quality health services, and shape the future of military medicine through education, training, and research. The vision of the hospital is to be the nation’s premier Military Medical Center, providing world-class care; anytime, anywhere.
