BELLE CHASSE, La. – The Louisiana Air National Guard's 159th Fighter Wing welcomed its new Maintenance Group Commander, Lt. Col. Peter R. Schneider, in an official ceremony at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Belle Chasse, La., Jan. 11.
Schneider said this command has been in his sights since he enlisted 23 years ago as an aircraft electrician system specialist. "It's the job I've always wanted. This is a dream come true, especially because I began in this field. I'm always excited to take on a new challenge," he said.
With more than 500 Airmen in the group, Schneider knows it takes just more than just dedication to get the job done. He defines leadership as getting up from behind the desk, shaking hands and getting to know his members and community. "This is my family. I want to know what's going on and how I can help. I admire anybody these days who decide to enlist into the military," he explained.
During his first address to the group, Schneider reminded the Airmen that their work is always appreciated and their teamwork in reaching common goals has proven to be extraordinary.
"I'm really excited. I've worked with many of you for years, and even enlisted with some of you. Our members always go above the regulation standards and take the airplanes and make them their own," he continued.
Schneider's past assignments have included aircraft maintenance officer; services flight commander; coordinator for the task force; joint director of military support; and the state public affairs office.
He has received numerous awards including the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Counter Drug Task Force Service Ribbon.
Schneider attributes his success to the many sacrifices his wife Francesca and two children, Emilie and Will, have made throughout his career. "Their support means the world to me," he concluded.
