    Story by Sgt. Danielle Rodrigues

    8th Marine Corps District

As Staff Sgt. Adolfo Govea entered the slate building to check into his new unit, his body pulsed with an uneasiness he couldn’t quite put his finger on. This new position was one that came with responsibility far greater than any he had before; he would be changing lives forever.

As he entered the first office on his left, he was greeted by a smiling staff sergeant, “Welcome to Recruiting Duty”.

Although recruiting duty is often seen as a daunting billet for many Marines, it is one that they will never forget.

“After a few months, I saw that I was having a big impact on these young men and women and that I am the one who is starting their transformation into becoming a Marine,” said Govea, a recruiter with Recruiting Sub-Station Abilene, Recruiting Station Fort Worth, Texas. “That has made this duty the most rewarding thing I have done thus far in my career.”

The position demands the very best of every recruiter as they are often the very first interaction an applicant will have with a Marine.

“I am showing them what it is to be a Marine and what they should strive for by always holding myself to the highest standards as I do them,” said Govea. “You are molding the future of our Corps with everything that you do.”

Although he has had many challenges to overcome over the course of Two and a half years, Govea has always given his best.

“Govea is always willing to pull on the rope harder than needed and shows superior initiative,” said Staff Sgt. Eric Tanner, the SNCOIC for Recruiting Sub-Station Abilene. “He makes time to maintain his physical appearance and Marine Corps standards even with the demands of recruiting. He sacrifices for the team at his own expense and is always looking for greater responsibility. He is constantly mentoring and molding his poolees into great young men and women and is always available to them when they need him.”

Among some of his achievements on this tour, Govea has earned a meritorious promotion, four Recruiter of the Month awards, one Recruiter of the Quarter award, two Bone Slayer awards and has recruited two young men who went on to become Company Honor Graduates from recruit training.
