CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Aug. 9, 2018) -- Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi Red Cross volunteers were recognized at morning colors, today. The 10-person team was praised for devoting over 2,000 volunteer hours to the main pharmacy and refill pharmacy, as well as assisting patients with Third-Party Billing collection forms.
Capt. Kimberly A. Taylor, Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi senior nurse executive, and advisory board member of the American Red Cross of Coastal Bend, Texas, addressed the staff on behalf of Capt. Miguel A. Cubano, commanding officer.
“We’re so proud of our volunteers and the dedication that they give to each of us, and to our patients that we care for,” said Taylor. “[We] also want to give a shout out to Lieutenant [Garret] Hand [director of Clinical Support Services, and department head, Pharmacy] and the entire crew that leads up the pharmacy efforts – all the officers, enlisted, and civilian personnel – without you we wouldn’t have a place for our volunteers to participate.”
Front and center at the flagpole during the event were volunteers, Ms. Carla Patterson, Ms. Kae Martin, Ms. Linda Pinion, Ms. Mary Boswell, Ms. Pearlie Archambault, and Mr. John Clapp, who credited Navy Medicine for inspiring him to help others.
“Several years ago when I was in the Navy, I got very sick – had pancreatitis and almost died. And the folks at San Diego Navy Hospital pulled me through,” said Clapp. “So, sitting at that desk in the front [pharmacy] window over there is one of the ways that I can give back. Because if it wasn’t for Navy Medicine, I wouldn’t be here now.”
Four other volunteers, Ms. Jennifer Bayer Ms. Grace Guillen, and Rev. Patrick Beck, and were unable to attend the recognition event.
Beck, from Corpus Christi, has been a diocesan priest for 42 years, is a retired Air Force Roman Catholic chaplain, and has volunteered for 4 years.
Today, more than 1.2 million people volunteer with the Red Cross nationwide, and the ratio of Red Cross volunteers to paid staff is 36 to 1, according to the Red Cross. One in every 200 Americans is a Red Cross volunteer. Red Cross volunteers have the opportunity to network with others, strengthen their community, acquire valuable experience, and gain that volunteer gratification feeling of helping others who need it the most.
The American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast Region likes to say "volunteering is the best job you will ever have and not get paid for it." Essentially, Red Cross volunteers are neighbors helping neighbors.
And at NHCCC, though it is common knowledge that resident Red Cross volunteers provide invaluable service, the entire staff appreciates their contributions.
“We thank you for being welcoming and supporting them as we continue to do what we do best – provide the highest quality care every single day,” Taylor told the assembled staff. “So thank you, [we are] very proud of this entire team!”
