The 36-month certification cycle ensures security departments are mission ready through extensive assessment of administrative records and training exercises.

“The security department has to be 24/7, 365 ready to do its mission; so we are always in a constant state of training and doing drills to ensure we are capable of doing that,” said Naval Base Coronado Security Officer Lt. Brian Parsons. “This is a never-ending process and we will continue to expand on what we did today. Continue to train and continue to improve.”

The three-part process starts with an audit of security department administrative programs on the first day.

“The second day is focused solely on our Anti-Terrorism Training Team and validating our ability to safely execute unit-level training drills,” said Parsons, “This includes our ability to plan complex drill scenarios, conduct them safely and effectively, and then correctly grade the watch-standers and their abilities to execute whatever drill that we are doing.”

The third part is a base-wide Integrated Training Team (ITT) exercise conducted on Naval Air Station North Island and Naval Amphibious Base. The massive collaboration of major response entities for ITT’s exercise included: NBC Security Department, Federal Fire and Emergency, Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) Military Working Dog (MWD) Unit, and NBSD Harbor Patrol.

“All the staff and Sailors perform exceptionally well-whether it is a drill or a real-world event,” said Parsons.
