Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) graduated 14 students enrolled in the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) and Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) during a graduation ceremony held in the Albert Behnke Auditorium, Aug. 10.
The graduates received certificates of completion after spending the summer at NMRC, and were reminded their work is not over, but just beginning.
“In many cases, teaching allows researchers to zoom out and achieve clarity regarding scientific challenges, and this clarity often leads to a break through or the identification of new avenues of research,” said Lt. William Graham, NMRC’s summer intern coordinator. “The mentor-mentee relationship is a fundamentally symbiotic one, and remains a top priority to the Navy.”
The interns worked on a variety of research projects with their respective mentors in a wide assortment of specialties, including operational and undersea medicine, wound infections, viral and rickettsial diseases, and biological defense research.
According to Will Green, a college student who has spent the past five summers working in the Undersea Medicine Department, his mentor Dr. Aaron Hall made a difference.
“Throughout the process of going through the background, observing the procedures, analyzing the data, drawing conclusions, and preparing my poster, Dr. Hall guided my learning,” Green said. “I maintained my independence in the project by also working individually, which is an invaluable skill in the world of research.”
Each year, NMRC welcomes high school, undergraduate, and graduate students from across the country as part of the Department of Defense Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative. The NREIP and SEAP programs provide an opportunity for selected students to participate in research projects with a mentor at NMRC or other Department of the Navy (DoN) laboratories during the summer.
The SEAP and NREIP programs aim to encourage students to pursue careers in science and engineering, and to enhance their educational experience via mentoring by laboratory personnel and research project participation. Mentors provide interns with knowledge and practical experience, but also benefit personally and professionally themselves as a result of the program.
To be eligible for NREIP, applicants must be U.S. citizens currently enrolled at a four-year U.S. college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education and must have completed 31 or more college credits. To be eligible for SEAP, applicants must be U.S. citizens older than 16, or within two weeks of turning 16, and must have completed the ninth grade prior to the program start date.
