Annie is a text messaging service that helps Veterans of the Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System manage their own health by using a cell phone.
When a VA health care team registers a Veteran to use Annie, they will get automated text messages that motivates them regarding specific health issues. After a reply is sent back to Annie from the Veteran, the system will let them know how they are doing.
Using Annie is like having your own nurse by your side, as the system can provide medication reminders, exercise prompts and smoking cessation messages in addition to other offers.
With Annie, Veterans can use their cell phone to get and respond to messages from Annie, work with care teams to use Annie as part of a health plan and receive texts that are educational and help track their own health
Annie is named after Anne G. Fox, the first woman to receive a Purple Heart.
To get started with the system, NWIHCS Veterans should contact their health care teams.
