An Iowa National Guard shooting team, made up of both Army and Air Guard members, earned a first place award at a recent National Guard shooting event near Hastings, Nebraska.

The team members included Senior Master Sgt. Mathew Hoffman and Tech. Sgt. Mitchell Treiber, both members of the 185th Air Refueling Wing, Security Forces Squadron, Sgt. Karl Jonhk assigned to Bravo troop 1/113th Cav. and SPC. Evan Guinn, also with the Iowa Army Guard.

The Iowa National Guard team competed in the Marksmanship Advisory Council Region Five, competition or MAC-V, shooting competition Aug. 3-4. The Nebraska National Guard hosted the annual MAC-V shooting competition which is composed of 11 shooting events where marksmanship teams from multiple states compete for honors.
The Iowa team was awarded first place in the “RT-355 Covering Fire” event, a timed running and shooting event. The Iowa team also placed third overall at the MAC-V regional shooting competition.

According to Treiber, the regional competition pits various states against each other in shooting exercises, where Army and Air National Guard state teams work together and they are judged on accuracy and speed.

“The best part was the competitiveness, it was great to see how others competed and to beat out teams from other states,” said Treiber.

Shooters at the event fired both pistols and rifles, shoot targets ranging from 15 to 400 meters away, shoot from various positions and participate in timed running and shooting events.

Hoffman said that the Iowa team qualified to compete in the National competition located in Little Rock, Arkansas next April.
