Global Medic 2018 helps ensure the U.S. Army Reserve provides the Army and the joint force with medical units that are trained, capable and combat-ready. Global Medic 2018 started with real-world training and validation of individual Soldier skills at the unit level, and will introduce large-scale collective training as the exercise continues.
Global Medic 2018 is part of Combat Support Training Exercise 86-18-02, a large-scale event designed to ensure U.S. Army Reserve units are capable of operating alongside and in support of each other. CSTX brings together more than 150 U.S. Army Reserve units comprised of nearly 10,000 servicemembers. It is a multicomponent, multinational event bringing together the U.S. Army Reserve, U.S. Army National Guard, and service-members from Canada and the United Kingdom.
Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Joshua Guthrie, a military police officer, with the 801st Combat Support Hospital, Higher Headquarters Detachment, has an important role in the unit. His job is to ensure they maintain force protection and combat-readiness capabilities.
“I help to direct and advise on force protection measures, physical security, [personal security teams] for higher ups, and all of that good stuff,” said Guthrie.
Guthrie used his 16 years as an MP to lead the individual movement technique training lane. Soldiers fine-tuned their tactical movement skills in situations like moving to contact under direct fire as a team.
“I like being boots-on-ground. I like being in the dirt, getting dirty. I like driving and shooting. I like being a Soldier,” he said. “Everyone is great at their job within the hospital, but I am here to sharpen that edge for anything else we might need to do. Everyone is a Soldier first.”
