Spartan Soldiers of 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, greet young scholars on their first day of school at Lyman Elementary School in Hinesville, Ga., Aug 6.

Spartan Soldiers paid a special visit to Lyman Elementary, handing a pencil to each student as pupils walked to class to begin a whole new year of learning.

The Lyman Elementary mission aims to provide all students with an education promoting excellence, good citizenship, and a love of learning. Students receive the knowledge and skills to be successful, contributing members of society.

“Each school in Liberty County is assigned to a unit. Staff Sgt. Walber reached out to us so Soldiers can support us, welcome our students, families, and community members,” said Miss Wendy Kellman, Lyman Hall Elementary Academic Specialist. “We appreciate all support provided that made it possible for us to dive into excellence.”

The Lyman military program, Helping Each Resilient Outstanding Exceptional Student, understands it can be challenging for new students to get adjusted in new areas. Spartan Soldiers also relate to the challenges associated with moving frequently. They know the value of small gestures like giving a student a pencil and a high-five right before the first day of class can calm a child’s nerves.

“It can be hard to make new friends. I have four children- all with different personalities, and I want them to be as acclimated as possible,” said Staff Sgt. Jason Walberer, Headquarters, and Headquarters Troop, S3 Schools NCO, 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment. “My family and I see the importance of participating in community events.”

Parents of Lyman students can further support their children’s educational opportunities on August 27, as Lyman Elementary staff discuss allotments of the school’s Title One funding.
