Being away from friends, family and home can be difficult for deployed Airmen, no matter the location.
To help make deployments more bearable, the 100th Air Refueling Wing Wing Staff Agencies assemble care packages each month in order to send a piece of home to their deployed members.
“The goal of these boxes is to remind them that we’re still thinking about them,” said Staff Sgt. Dimas Bernacchia, 100th ARW financial management technician and organizer of the July event. “Although they are deployed, they are still in our thoughts and we care about them.”
The monthly care package event encourages families of deployed members, plus all service members within wing staff agencies, to participate. Boxes are filled with themed decorations, donated snacks and messages from volunteers within the squadron.
“We are different units within WSA,” Bernacchia said. “I think this is a good opportunity for us all to bond together, and do something creative and thoughtful for our members who are deployed.”

There is a different theme each month, which usually corresponds to a holiday or season.

The theme is not the only thing that changes. Each month, a different unit within the wing staff hosts and organizes the event. “I love how it’s going around each shop, where they take responsibility and they make sure it gets done,” said Staff Sgt. Brittany McGill, 100th ARW occupational safety craftsman and volunteer. “It spreads the wealth and I think it’s awesome.”

McGill has volunteered at each care package event since arriving at RAF Mildenhall and looks forward to the event continuing in the months ahead.

Anyone wishing to either donate items for the care packages, or start up a care package program for their own squadron, should contact their unit’s first sergeant.
