FORT IRWIN, Calif. – Even in the age of social media and cell phones that provide instant communication nearly anywhere in the world, old-fashioned “snail mail” provides an important service and morale boost for Soldiers at the National Training Center here.

“Mail is important because it helps Soldiers’ morale both here in a training environment and in a deployed environment,” said Sgt. 1st Class Warren Wolfe, Postal Platoon noncommissioned officer-in-charge with the 213th Personnel Company, 213th Regional Support Group, Pennsylvania Army National Guard and a Jonestown, Pa. resident.

The 213th Personnel Company is providing support services such as mail delivery, Reception, Staging, Onward-movement and Integration (RSOI), and a casualty liaison team to support the 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, the primary training audience for the Aug. 4-18 NTC rotation.

While there are 21 members of the Postal Platoon, Wolfe is currently the only postal NCO with the 213th PC at NTC.

Every day, Wolfe travels to the Post Office to pick up the mail, sorts it in the company’s makeshift office at the edge of the training area, and posts a roster on the office door listing all the Soldiers who have mail. A designated Soldier from each unit then comes to pick up that unit’s mail and bring it to any area of the base, which is larger than the state of Rhode Island.

Wolfe sorts and distributes hundreds of pieces of mail per week, lifting the morale of Soldiers training in a difficult, austere environment and providing them with a tangible connection to loved ones back home.
