SEATTLE - The Seattle Rotary Club hosted a luncheon, recognizing local military leaders for their participation, and featured a women-in-leadership panel discussion at Seattle’s Bell Harbor Conference Center Aug. 1, as part of the 69th annual Seafair Fleet Week.

The event, attended by hundreds of the Seattle area’s most influential business and community leaders, military flag officers and their spouses, aides and command master chiefs from throughout the region, honored contributions of women in leadership and highlighted their journeys of persistence and resiliency.

Local military leaders were recognized for their participation, followed by a women’s leadership panel consisting of two active-duty military officers and two former military officers currently working in the civilian sector.

“Women have been serving in nuclear-powered submarines since 2009," said Rear Adm. Blake Converse, commander, Submarine Group Nine. "We’re going to have our first commanding officer sometime in the next seven years, I believe, so probably before 2025, I would guess. We have women now serving in both the enlisted ranks and officer ranks on every one of the types of submarines that we operate. The opportunities are there, and we are going to continue to expand. I’m very excited and the quality of the women is fantastic.”

The guest panel, consisting of former Marine Corps 2nd Lt. Whitney Mason, Lt. Cmdr. Laura Gallassero, former Army Capt. Dianka Linear and Air Force Capt. Amanda Robillard addressed a crowd of more than 200 members of local business leaders and military officers from both the U.S. and Canadian Royal Navy.

“I think there still needs to be opportunities for women, and I think men in the military should be better allies for women,” said Linear. “We still need those male allies, bringing us in and making sure that we get the training that is needed, and making those connections.”

The four women answered questions about personal and professional challenges both in and out of the military and spoke about how they credited perseverance with their success.

“Because of the support of the men I work with, I feel like I have more opportunities as a female,” said Robillard. “I’ve never found a door that I can’t walk through.”

The Emerald City has hosted Seafair Fleet Week on its waterfront since 1950, celebrating the courageous men and women who serve our country.
