BISMARCK, N.D. - William L. Seekins of Jamestown, N.D., was promoted to brigadier general during a ceremony today at the Raymond J. Bohn Armory in Bismarck. Seekins is currently assigned as the Land Component Commander for the N.D. Army National Guard. Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota National Guard adjutant general, presided over the ceremony. Family, friends and fellow Guardsmen witnessed Seekin's new rank placed on him by Sprynczynatyk, and his wife Joanne.
"I congratulate Bill Seekins on his promotion to brigadier general," said North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven. "This importation promotion demonstrates the trust placed in him by the North Dakota National Guard and his outstanding performance."
As part of the ceremony, the adjutant general read Seekins the oath of office, which is traditionally administered to all commissioned officers in the North Dakota National Guard each time they are promoted. This oath re-affirms the officer's commitment to the Constitution of the United States and the State of North Dakota.
"Bill Seekins is fully deserving of this promotion having successfully led Soldiers from platoon to brigade sized units," said Sprynczynatyk. This promotion is indicative of his superb leadership and dedication to mission accomplishment at all echelons of command within the North Dakota Army National Guard."
Seekins began his service as an enlisted Soldier in 1977 and earned his commission as a 2nd Lt. in 1979. He served in numerous capacities as platoon leader, company executive officer, detachment and company commander, as well as various battalion staff positions with the Jamestown-based 141st Engineer Combat Battalion and the Fargo, N.D., based 142nd Combat Battalion.
In 1999, he assumed command of the Minot, N.D., based 164th Engineer Combat Battalion (Mechanized) before becoming the Commander of the Camp Grafton Training Center near Devils Lake, N.D., in 2002. In 2004, Seekins was assigned as commander of the Engineer Brigade, 34th Infantry Division a position he held until 2005.
Subsequently, he was assigned as the Commander of the 164th Regional Training Institute at Camp Grafton until October 2008 when he assumed duties as the land component commander for the North Dakota National Guard.
As land component commander, Seekins is responsible for leading the Army component of the North Dakota National Guard which consists of nearly 3,200 Soldiers. Seekins is a traditional National Guardsmen who is employed full-time by a civilian employer.
"I'd like to thank the leadership of the North Dakota National Guard for selecting me for this promotion and placing their trust in me," said Seekins. "Without the great support from my family and my employer, I would not have been able to successfully serve in the North Dakota Army National Guard these past 30 years."
