MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, California – U.S. Marines with 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company (EOD), 1st Marine Logistics Group (MLG), held their 2nd annual Gunnery Sgt. Michael J. Clark Commemoration Ceremony on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, July 20, 2018.The ceremony highlighted the EOD Memorial Garden, created in 2016 as a memorial to honor past and present EOD technicians who have gave their life in the line of duty.
“One of the things we do well as Marines is remembering where we come from,” said Master Sgt. Andrew Small, operations chief. “We want to remember all of our EOD technicians; ones that died four or five decades ago, or four or five years ago.”
The garden was created by the Marines of 1st EOD Co., who, after receiving the green light from unit officials, did so on their own time with independently-raised funds.
According to Small, what started out as a simple and humble gesture, has evolved into what is now a highly sought-out memorial throughout the entire EOD community.
“This memorial enables us to continue caring for the families of or fallen technicians by drawing them back to us,” said Small. “It has turned into a fairly significant memorial for, not just technicians, but their families as well.”
As Marines, we are bound by the honor and title of those who have worn the uniforms before. Memorials like the EOD Memorial Rose Garden are just one of many ways that we pay tribute to those prominent individuals who, in our past, have set the standard for what it means to be a United States Marine.
“The important thing is that we gather to pay respect to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of EOD duty,” said Maj. Andrew Cheatum, company commander. “This is a day to reflect upon where we come from, where we are, and where we’re going. Our future is bright, and we owe to those who have written our story in blood and sacrifice.”
