SACRAMENTO, Calif. – (NNS) Navy Medicine joined the Navy Community Outreach (NAVCO) team in events across Sacramento for Navy Week, July 19 - 20.

Rear Adm. Brian Pecha, Reserve Fleet Surgeon, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, joined a team of several other Navy assets to engage with the Sacramento community and share the Navy Medicine mission.

"As a resident of Northern California myself, it was great to give back and meet with some of the residents and medical experts here in Sacramento" said Pecha.

Pecha began Sacramento Navy Week with the local Kiwanis Club of Greater Sacramento and Military Appreciation Day at the California State Fair. Sports Medicine was a highlight for Admiral Pecha’s portion of Navy Week as he met with Dr. Jason Brayley, a physician for the Sacramento Kings and several sports medicine physicians from UC Davis, and Sacramento Republic FC.

During his time in Sacramento Pecha also met with the California National Guard, the Director of the Northern California VA Hospital, Mr. David Stockwell and Director of the Aerospace Museum of California, Mr. Tom Jones.

Lastly Admiral Pecha and several of the other Navy assets gave back by visiting with children at the UC Davis Children’s Hospital and meeting with families at a cook-out hosted by the local Ronald McDonald house.

"The Navy doesn't have a presence in Sacramento like we do in San Diego,” said Pecha. “Navy week was a unique opportunity to showcase what the Navy does, and to highlight what Navy Medicine does for Sailors and Marines."

Several Navy assets participated in events across Sacramento during Navy week including, Navy Band Northwest, Sailors from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 49, the Scorpions, Navy Operational Support Command Sacramento, USS Constitution, Navy Band Northwest, USS La Jolla, Navy Meteorology and Oceanography command, U.S. Navy Ceremonial Drill Team, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group One.

Historically, Navy Week events draw thousands of attendees to participate and create a dialogue between sailors and local residents. The events are designed to raise awareness about the Navy the nation needs in areas that do not have a large naval presence.

Sacramento Navy Week is the seventh of 14 Navy weeks in 2018 that focus a variety of assets, equipment and personnel on a single city for a week-long series of engagements designed to bring America’s Navy closer to the people it protects.

Navy Medicine is a global health care network of 63,000 personnel that provide health care support to the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, their families and veterans, in high operational tempo environments, at expeditionary medical facilities, medical treatment facilities, hospitals, clinics, hospital ships and research units around the world.
