    9th Marine Corps District

FARGO, N.D. — A young wrestler’s journey to the national championship is not an easy one. Along the way there are grueling practice sessions, intense workouts and many setbacks. But as the athlete faces their opponent at the final match one thing is clear; they never give up. Discipline and courage are a few of the traits that led them to this moment. That same fighting spirit that lives within that young wrestler also lives in the heart of every United States Marine.
It is because of these shared values that the Marine Corps Recruiting Command partnered with USA Wrestling at the FargoDome for the Cadet/Junior National Championships in Fargo July 12-20, 2018.
Col. David Fallon, the 9th Marine Corps District Commanding Officer, welcomed the athletes and families to the event with words of motivation.
“When you think of a wrestler, there are a couple of words that come to mind,” said Fallon. “Disciplined, committed, tough and willing to persevere. And when you think of the Marine Corps, those exact words come to mind as well. That is why the Marine Corps is so committed to the wrestling community.”
The tournament is the largest in the country with more than 5,000 wrestlers competing throughout the week. Marines on site were honored to present the champions with a commemorative plaque eto congratulate them on their incredible accomplishments.
“Our core values align very well,” said Pete Isais, the director of national events for USAW. “All these character traits of what it takes to be a leader, are the same of what it takes to be a good wrestler. I really feel that our partnership works well together and hopefully some of these athletes turn out to be great Marines down the line.”
