SEOUL, Republic of Korea (July 13, 2018) – Sailors assigned to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea (CNFK) finalized the relocation of CNFK Forward headquarters from Army Garrison Yongsan in Seoul to Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, July 13.

The move stems from the Yongsan Relocation Plan and Land Partnership Plan between the U.S. and Republic of Korea (ROK) governments in 2004 to move U.S. forces to garrisons south of the Han River.

“Moving to Pyeongtaek ensures that CNFK remains closely aligned with the United Nations Command (UNC) and U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) command headquarters,” said Rear Admiral Michael E. Boyle, commander, CNFK, “we are just one small part of a larger effort to continue strengthening our ironclad partnership with ROK.”

The movement of equipment, furniture, and personnel required extensive logistical planning and technical support to maintain operational readiness during the transition and familiarize Sailors, staff, and families with the new facilities.

“This week marked the successful end to a carefully planned, multi-part move that has spanned about three years,” said Cmdr. Jeff Pfeil, assistant chief of staff for engineering, CNFK, “It was a smooth transition thanks to the efforts of not only CNFK Sailors and staff but the USFK Transformation and Relocation office staff as well.”

The relocation assists CNFK in maintaining military readiness and facilitating a strong relationship with the UN and Joint command structure.

“Operating out of Busan, Chinhae, and now Pyeongtaek is a capability unique to CNFK,” said Boyle, “The naval component command is now more closely aligned than ever with the majority of our staff working side-by-side with the ROK Navy in Busan and smaller footprints at both the U.S. Navy installation in Chinhae and inside the UNC/USFK headquarters in Pyeongtaek.”

Camp Humphrey’s construction represents the largest transformation, re-stationing and construction project in the Department of Defense’s history. Slated to completely finish in 2020 with an estimated size more than 3,500 acres, Camp Humphreys will be the largest overseas U.S. military base in the world.

CNFK is the regional commander for the U.S. Navy in the Republic of Korea and provides expertise on naval matters to area military commanders, including the Commander for the United Nations Command, the Combined Forces Command, and Commander, U.S. Forces Korea.
